Title of the practice- Mentor-Mentee Programme

          Objectives of the Practices:-

  • To provide Support in the form of mentorship and counseling them so that the students can cope up with the new environment.
  • To monitor the overall development of the students during the 3 years of UG/2years of PG Programs.
  • To establish a vibrant relationship between the teachers and the students that will ensure responsible behavior and discipline.

The Context:-

            The institute analyzed system of having proper mentoring guidance and counseling in the region the fact that most of the students are from remote areas and first generation learners, makes it imperative on the part of the institution to provide mentoring a guidance for all – round development of the students on academic lines.

The Practice:-

            Mentoring session is regularly conducted uniformly by all mentors on every Thursday from 11.30 to 12.30 PM. The session is compulsory for every student to attend without fail.

  • Each mentor is assigned with 25 students for the whole duration of 2/3 years of PG/UG respectively.
  • The mentors are provided with details of mentees performance in terms of academic (weekly tests, midterm tests, and semester end exams) and attendance records.
  • The mentor also keeps track on mentees personal development like co-curricular activities, discipline and career related issues.
  • The practice of mentoring system is evaluated by the IQAC so as to ensure quality and efficacy of the practice.
  • The grievances of the mentees are forwarded to the principal for necessary remedial actions.
  • Details of meeting, minutes of meeting and issued raised / resolved etc are noted in a note book which is maintained by each mentor.
  • Further a printed booklet with personal profile, academic profile, performance in exam, and achievements/interest in co-curricular activities of mentors are recorded promptly.

Evidence of success:

  • The genuine interest shown by the mentor has developed to face personal and academic challenges.
  • Consistent caring and guiding act as a moral booster in improving regular attendance and contributes to personal and educational growth of the students.
  • Continuous monitoring for technical and soft skill enhancement has increased the number of employable graduates.

Problems encountered and resources required:

  • The programme would be more successful if a student has the same mentor throughout the course.
  • Sometimes students preferring a particular teacher as her mentor, cannot be accommodated due to student strength.
  • At times mentors may not be able to spend their time due to academic or administrative preoccupations.
  • If the mentors are allotted across the disciplines, they may feel free to share their problems of academic in nature.

Best Practice-2

 

Title of the practice:

Fostering social responsibility among students for “Social – Economic betterment of adopted villages through community engagement”- a commitment beyond campus. Objectives of the Practice

 

  • To identify various problems of adopted villages in coordination with the govt. departments concerned.
  • To inform villages about various Govt. schemes and arrange awareness among them to apply and utilize the benefit.
  • To create awareness and value of education among school children of the adopted villages.
  • To empower the rural poor through capacity building and entrepreneurial programmes.

The context

The local bodies have to instill a sense of civic responsibilities among the students and to introduce them to the ground realities, various extension activities are undertaken in the 5 adopted villages through Depts. NSS, Community Cell, Women Empowerment Cell etc. In order to instill the social responsibility in the young minds of students, involving them in various community activities and share their expertise with villagers while creating awareness, rendering service on various activities like sanitation, blood donation, other health campaigns organization, preventive measure on commutable disease, importance of vaccination etc.

 

The Practice

Extension activities are a strong practice of Sir C R Reddy College for Women which exhibits an enduring commitment to the society. The multifaceted initiatives and practices are undertaken by different units of the college as follows:

 

  1. Life & Livelihood initiatives:
  • Arranged cutting & tailoring units for rural poor women in rural Skill Development Centre established at Jalipudi village.
  • Foods processing and preservation training for women.
  • Awareness on Public health, sanitation & health issues of children & women.

b) Educational:

  • Workshop on language skills for High school students and teachers.
  • Awareness on modern trends in technology usage by Dept. of Computer Science.
  • Established computer center for DTP learning for the benefit of rural poor women to learn the skill for employment.
  • Herbal medicines – usage for chronic diseases.
  • Saving Schemes, Maintenance of Accounts, Banking procedures, entrepreneurship etc., by Dept. of commerce.

c) Environment Awareness:

Plantation programmes cleanliness drive, weed removal, Ban of plastic etc.

 

d) Moral & intellectual Development:

  • Teaching ethical/moral values in High school students, life skill education, skill development courses etc. basing on the recent trends in education as a 4th dimension of education

 

Evidences of success:

  • The appreciation and the expression of gratitude by managements of the beneficiary schools.
  • When the college adopted the 5 villages in 2018 there was only very low % of students with higher education qualification, but today we have large no.of students with Intermediate, Graduation and Post Graduates most of them are pursuing their education.
  • The impact of cleanliness, awareness programme.
  • The students leadership activities, self confidence public speaking skill, problem solving capacity and team work in undertaking collective activities.

 

Problems Encountered:

  • Lack of scientific sprit owing to poor literacy.
  • Lack of motivation of people towards entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Limited financial resources to takeup capital intensive initiatives by the villagers investment.
  • Intervening exam schedule when the activities are planned by the students.

Resources required:

  • Allotment of institutional budget to carry out extension and outreach activities.
  • Special grants from Govt. organizations.
  • Involvement of alumni with financial support.
  • Coordination from district authorities.
